The Rebuild Trap
Every week, a business owner reaches out to us and says: "I need a brand new website."
Sometimes they're right. But more often than not, what they actually need is a better version of what they already have.
Here's how to tell the difference — and how to avoid wasting money on a rebuild you might not need.
When You Need a Full Rebuild
A complete rebuild makes sense when:
- Your website was built on an outdated platform that can't be updated
- The design is more than 5 years old and looks it
- The site isn't mobile-responsive at all
- You've outgrown your original site structure (e.g., you now offer 10 services but the site only shows 3)
- The backend is a mess and nobody knows how to update it
If two or more of these apply, it's probably time for a fresh start.
When You Just Need a Refresh
A refresh is usually the better option when:
- The site loads fine and works on mobile, but feels stale
- You need to update your copy, photos, or service list
- Your branding has evolved but the bones of the site are solid
- You want to add features like a booking form, pricing page, or blog
- The design is okay — it just doesn't sell well
A refresh costs less, takes less time, and keeps the SEO equity you've already built.
The Smart Middle Ground
Sometimes the best approach is what we call a strategic redesign — keep the structure and domain authority, but completely rethink the layout, copy, and conversion strategy.
This is what we do most often at Bridge City Digital. We take what's working, fix what isn't, and build a website that actually drives results — without starting from scratch.
How to Decide
Ask yourself:
- Does my current site load fast and look good on mobile?
- Is the content accurate and compelling?
- Do I have clear calls to action on every page?
- Can I easily update the site when needed?
If you answered "no" to most of these, a rebuild is probably the right call. If it's just one or two, a targeted refresh will get you further, faster.
What We Recommend
Don't let anyone talk you into a $10,000 rebuild if a $750 refresh will do the job. And don't cheap out on a DIY patch job if your foundation is crumbling.
